I tried to replace the knock sensor in my 96 I30. It’s hidden deep in the V, underneath the intake manifold. OK, so maybe that’s not inside the engine, but still. Well, anyway, I tried to put an open-end in there, and now I can’t get it out!

Hope it doesn’t go BANG BANG while I’m driving! (I just idled for a few seconds, and it seems to be ok so far)

Asking this question to us is like asking an NFL player if he’s ever been injured.

Do you have a retractable magnet? They’re one of the most useful tools to own.

Hope it was a harbor freight throwaway.

Yes. I went to install a K&N filter on my Dart and when I went to take the screws (why not just clips, I have no idea) off the air box I dropped one into the engine bay. A sub 5-min project took 45 min since I had to take the jack out of the trunk and jack the car and try to find where in the undertray the damn screw landed. Luckily it was in an easy to reach area....

I had one that was also a pen and a torch. It was the most useful device man has ever known. I broke it because I'm not allowed nice things.

Once..

Kinja'd!!!

I dropped a washer down the Intake of a BBC that was about to go in the next day. That stupid washer found it’s way past an open Valve and sat it’s happy ass on top of the #6 Piston.

It cost me two new Head gaskets and Intake gaskets and a week of anticipation.

In the end it was all moot. the Cam self destructed on break in and I wound up Re-Rebuilding the engine.

I got rid of it 6 months ago. An idiot hit the car while it was parked, and anyway, I couldn’t keep the check engine light off

I dropped a screwdriver into my engine, luckily it fell down in front of the radiator into the front bumper where I could just slide it out.

I thought that I’d lost an injector tip in my Scirocco’s engine when I had them out a few weekends ago. Ended up ordering a borescope online and putting the whole job on hold for a week until it arrived, since the intake manifold fasteners looked borderline inaccessible (and I’d always really wanted an excuse to buy a borescope). After all that, it turned out that the injector tip was nowhere to be found, and must have either always been missing or had been chewed up and spat out long before. Still, it’s a horrible feeling.

If it’s not actually inside the engine proper, I wouldn’t worry about it. Sure, it sucks to lose a tool, but it shouldn’t be able to do any harm where it is.

Dropped a piece of metal from a water channel into the cylinder doing a headgasket job on my sis’s janky old car. fired it up, ran fine, then CHUNK TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP as it had pounded itself into the head and was being hammered to bits by the piston. Ended up pulling the head another 2 times just to try and limit the tapping noise so it didn’t sound like an old pushrod engine.
